How we work

Process and timelines

Private label, OEM and ODM

Three routes to your own product, with very different costs, minimums and timelines. Choosing the wrong one is the most expensive mistake in this category — not because it fails, but because it takes nine months longer than it needed to.

The three routes compared

RouteWhat it meansRelative costRelative timeBest when
Private label A stock formula the factory already makes, with your branding and label Lowest Fastest You want to test demand quickly with limited capital
OEM You provide the formula or a detailed specification; they manufacture it Middle to high Slower You have a differentiated formula that is the point of the brand
ODM You take a factory design or formula and modify it to your brand Middle Medium You want something distinctive without funding full development

What actually drives MOQ

  • Batch size, not goodwill. A mixing or encapsulation run has a minimum. Below it you still pay for the run, so the per-unit price rises sharply.
  • Packaging minimums. Bottles, jars and printed cartons usually have their own MOQ that is higher than the product's, and tooling for a bespoke jar or tube is a separate six-figure-sum line in some formats.
  • Format complexity. Gummies, liquids, sticks and sunscreen multiply the minimum because of tooling, filling lines and stability work.
  • Number of SKUs. Three flavours of the same powder is three production runs, three stability files and three labels — often the reason a launch budget triples.

A realistic timeline

StageWhat happensTypical duration
1. Brief and specificationCategory, format, actives, target market, price point and volumeDays
2. Regulatory checkConfirm the ingredient and claim position in the destination marketDays to weeks
3. QuotationIndicative unit price, MOQ, tooling and lead time from assessed manufacturersDays
4. SamplingFormula development or adaptation, one to three sample rounds2–8 weeks
5. Artwork and claimsLabel design, claim substantiation, mandatory statements, translations2–6 weeks
6. TestingStability, preservative efficacy, heavy metals, microbiology as applicableReal-time data takes months; accelerated data is faster
7. ProductionBatch manufacture, filling, packing and QC release2–6 weeks
8. Shipment and clearanceFreight, customs clearance, duty and tax, delivery1–6 weeks by mode

Stages 4 to 6 frequently run in parallel, which is where good project management saves real time. The step that most often delays a launch is stage 5 — approving claims and artwork — because it involves your team, the compliance reviewer and the printer.

The contract terms brands forget

  • Formula ownership and your right to take it to another manufacturer
  • Artwork, moulds and tooling ownership, and where they are stored between orders
  • Specification lock. Any change to actives, excipients, packaging or process requires your written approval
  • Non-conformance remedy. What happens if a batch fails testing or arrives out of specification
  • Batch record retention and your right to request it, for as long as your market requires
  • Exclusivity, if you are paying for development — and the price of it if it is not offered

Private label questions

What is the difference between private label, OEM and ODM?

Private label means a manufacturer's existing stock formula and packaging, sold under your brand. OEM means you supply the specification and they make it. ODM means the manufacturer has a formula and design library and you adapt one of their products with your branding and modifications. The cost and time difference between the three is large, so choosing deliberately matters.

What is a realistic MOQ for a first order?

It depends on the form and whether the formula exists. Stock-formula capsules and tablets typically have the lowest minimums because the manufacturer is already running the line; custom gummies, liquids and sunscreen sit at the top because they need tooling, stability work and sometimes a new filling line. Always ask for the batch size, because you pay for the batch whether you order it or not.

How long does it take from decision to first shipment?

For a stock formula with your label, a few weeks of artwork and compliance work plus production and transit. For a custom formula in a new format, expect several months because formulation, sampling rounds, stability testing and certification happen sequentially. The single biggest delay is usually artwork and claims approval, not production.

Who owns the formula and the artwork?

It should be stated explicitly in the manufacturing agreement. Formula ownership, the right to use the formula if you change manufacturer, artwork ownership and tooling ownership all need to be written down. Assuming it is obvious is how brands end up unable to move a product to a second manufacturer.

Tell us the product, the market and the volume. This form opens your own email client — nothing is stored on this website, and there is no account to create.

What happens next

  1. We confirm whether the specification is viable in your market and flag anything that is not.
  2. We come back with indicative pricing, MOQ and lead time from manufacturers we have assessed against the standard on this site.
  3. If you want to proceed, you order a paid sample from a production run.
  4. Only then does a production order and deposit make sense.

What we will not do

  • Quote you on a product whose claims would not be legal in your market
  • Pass on a certificate of analysis that is not batch-specific
  • Take a payment for stock we have not verified
  • Hide the manufacturer — you will know who makes your product
